Like many fanatics, I inherited my love for the Cowboys from my father. I often find myself repeating this fact to friends and acquaintances whom can’t understand this love. Where I live (Portland, OR), like so many other parts of the country not named Dallas, being a Cowboy fan is like supporting Darth Maul or Iran’s nuclear program; it’s purely unacceptable. The derision I put up with as a Cowboy fan surpasses the flak I receive in any other aspect of my life. Seriously.

So why does my love live on? It’s hard to say. It’s not like the ‘Boys have been particularly great over the last 18 years. They have the reputation of the Yankees, but since Aikman retired, they’ve had the success of the Mets. Too often, Jerry Jones is indefensibly repellent – egotistic, arrogant, occasionally even downright evil. It’s a fact: being a Cowboy fan isn’t all its made out to be.

Yet when I flip on the TV Sunday afternoon and see the lights bouncing around Jerry World, the monstrous JumboTron looming over the field, and nearly 100,000 fans screaming in pride while the team busts out of the locker room onto that brilliant star, I know my loyalty is well placed. For those three and a half hours, I can be at peace with my team of choice.

As long as none of my friends are around.

A lot of football fans despise the Dallas Cowboys, but does that really make sense? After all, where would football be without the Cowboys? This is a team with legends like Bart Starr, Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith, Dion Sanders, and Michael Irvin. You might have noticed that the majority of these names are from the same era. That’s because the Cowboys of the early ‘90s were one of the best teams ever assembled in NFL history. Don’t let those video game simulations fool you. They always predict that the San Francisco 49’ers of the ‘80s were the strongest team of all time, but are computers ever correct in these situations. Those simulations are based on stats, not heart, determination and grit.

Are the Cowboys headed back in the right direction? If last season was any proof, the answer would be “no.” They just can’t seem to beat the Giants in the big games. That said, the Cowboys have a lot of weapons on offense. If they can patch up the offense line and corner back positions, they’ll be sitting at the top of the AFC East again. Once that happens, there is no telling where things can go. One thing is certain; Romo isn’t getting any younger. If he’s a true champion, he will show it now.

It wasn’t that long ago when Cowboys fans were on top of the world. As Jerry Jones kept promising, Tony Romo was going to take this team to the Super Bowl. Well, that was several years ago, and other than some meaningless games against weak opponents, Tony Romo has not been stellar in pressure situations. Some people might blame the defense, but did John Elway have a great defense in any of his Super Bowl seasons? Did Tom Brady have a great defense last season? The obvious answer to both questions is “no.I found some more information <a href=’http://sportsguypressblog.wordpress.com/2012/04/11/jerry-jones-has-brainwashed-us-all/’>here.”

Now, Dallas Cowboys fans are beginning to speak out. They’re still sick over the fact the Jerry Jones fired Jimmy Johnson, even though that was nearly two decades ago. There’s no telling how many Super Bowls the Cowboys could have rattled off if Jerry hadn’t done that. Now, Jerry is once again too involved with the team.

Put simply, the fans are fed up with the Jerry Jones-Tony Romo tandem. It’s obviously not working. The fans would rather clean house and start from scratch. Several fans have brought up the idea of trading Romo for some high draft picks. This would be similar to a Herschel Walker situation, which led to the Dallas Cowboys dynasty of the early ‘90s. Will this happen? It’s not likely, but if the voice of the fans keeps getting louder, then anything is possible.
